Convite Educativo: From the classroom to the community, and from the community to the classroom.

An experience of collective creation on migration and social justice at Xavier ETP

The Educational Convit/e is a pedagogical proposal promoted by Mescladís that invites high school students to reflect and create around social issues through a collaborative magazine project. During the second quarter of the academic year, we developed the project at ETP Xavier with a group of 14 students in the 2nd year of Bachillerato, within the framework of the subject dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over the course of twelve sessions, divided between the school and the Mescladís team, the group worked on a common theme: migration and global inequalities. The proposal was organized through an active and cooperative methodology. The students were divided into thematic commissions and took on roles inspired by professional profiles in the editorial field: writing, photography, illustration and section coordination. Each student assumed a specific responsibility and actively participated in the creation of the contents.

The project was articulated in different pedagogical phases: introduction, sensitization, creation and closure. Throughout this journey, moments of research and debate, guided reflection sessions, teamwork and public presentations in the classroom were combined, where progress was shared, ideas were proposed and constructive feedback was generated among peers. As the weeks progressed, group cohesion grew and the exchange between roles and teams became more fluid. In the last session, dedicated to evaluation, a collective assessment was shared: the group expressed the desire to work on more specific topics, to further encourage collaboration between teams and enthusiastically recommended the project to other institutes.

In the last session, a quantitative evaluation was also collected through an anonymous form. The results reflect a very positive impact of the project: 92.9% of the students consider that the experience has helped them to reflect on migration and human rights, and 85.7% state that they have a better understanding of how migration is related to other global issues such as climate change, poverty or inequality. These data reinforce the value of an educational proposal that promotes critical thinking from a meaningful and creative experience.

One of the aspects most highly valued by the students was the visit of three professionals from the cultural and journalistic world, who offered workshops related to each of the magazine's areas of work:

Belén López Peiró, journalist and writer specialized in memory, violence and personal narrative, worked with the students on how to write from their own experience, distinguishing between facts, points of view and emotions in the construction of the story.

Joan Tomás, a documentary photographer with extensive experience in diversity and human rights projects, offered practical tools to build a visual story with impact.

Nadia HafidNadia Hafid, a prominent illustrator in the field of social comics(El País, The New Yorker), shared her creative process and accompanied the group in the visual translation of complex ideas.

These workshops not only provided technical knowledge, but also served as a bridge between the educational stage and the professional world, providing context, meaning and motivation to the work developed in the classroom.

The end result was a magazine created entirely by the students, divided into five thematic sections that address different social issues from creative perspectives. It includes family stories of migration linked to symbolic objects, conversations about processes of adaptation to the educational system, opinion articles on the causes of global inequality, biographies of women who have faced adverse life situations, and a visual section with a collective migration map and cultural symbols of the class group. Each section combines text, illustrations and photographs by the students themselves, who took on writing, design, editing and coordination roles. Beyond the final product, the process allowed them to develop communication skills, teamwork, critical thinking and social commitment from a real experience of collective creation.

With this collaboration with ETP Xavier, the Educational Convit/e continues to consolidate itself as a pedagogical tool to connect educational centers, culture and social commitment. From Mescladís, we remain committed to an education that is linked to reality and that gives a voice to young people to tell it.
